Changes in the GMAT Question Pattern in 2021

In terms of question patterns, the GMAT syllabus 2021 differs from the GMAT syllabus 2020 in a few ways. To assist applicants in comprehending the changes, we have extracted the following points:

  1. Pure reasoning problems will be included in the GMAT mathematics syllabus.
  2. In the revised GMAT curriculum, conversion questions will be included.
  3. Addition of a set question with phrases like ‘both’ and ‘neither.’
  4. Coordinate geometry is covered in the GMAT Geometry part of the course.

The GMAT Online Exam and curriculum have also undergone significant changes, resulting in the ‘Enhanced Online GMAT Exam – the inclusion of the GMAT AWA portion.’

GMAT Quant Section Syllabus

Because there are so many candidates with a humanities background, the Quant component of the GMAT does not ask for any concepts beyond high school arithmetic. The GMAT quantitative curriculum includes two types of questions:

  • The GMAT Problem Solving portion has about 18-20 problems and covers algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. GMAT problem-solving problems assess how well test takers use reasonable techniques to address any important circumstance.
  • GMAT Data Sufficiency has 11-13 questions and includes a problem with two statements in which the applicant must assess if the presented statement is sufficient to answer the problem in the question. Individual sufficiency, elimination procedure, and solving the goal are only a few of the preparation ideas for the GMAT data sufficiency MBA course.

The following are important topics covered in the Quant part of the GMAT

ArithmeticGeometryNumbers Properties
Pre-algebraAlgebraPermutation and Combination
Exponents and RootsFractionsDecimals
PercentagesSimple and Compound InterestRatio and Proportion
Set TheoryCoordinate GeometryProbability

Note: The GMAT quantitative reasoning curriculum prohibits the use of a calculator on this portion of the exam, so it’s critical to brush up on your number sense, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve dealt with numbers. Candidates can also flourish in quant capabilities with the right GMAT Quant Books.

GMAT Verbal Section Syllabus

The GMAT Verbal portion curriculum assesses a test taker’s ability to analyse and read a supplied extract in order to answer the questions. This part is essential to ensure that efficient English is used when required.

There are three types of questions in the GMAT verbal reasoning section:

Reading Comprehension questions ask you to read a short (200-300 words) or lengthy (300-400 words) passage and then answer three or four multiple-choice questions based on the inferences. Inference, application, primary concept, supporting the idea, logical structure, and style are all reading skills that will be examined.

Critical Reasoning questions present an argument that you must examine, and they assess your ability to construct, evaluate, and develop or evaluate a plan of action. CR questions come in eight different varieties, all of which are multiple-choice.

Sentence A sentence is presented to you as a correction issue. You must determine whether or not there is a grammatical error in this statement. If that’s the case, you have four options for the underlined area.

The following are the topics that will be addressed in the GMAT Verbal Reasoning section:

Critical ReasoningRhetorical construction of the sentencesSentence correction including finding errors or omissionReading unseen passages
Subject-verb agreementMisplace modifiersCountable Vs UncountableParallelism

The GMAT verbal curriculum may be improved by completing several GMAT verbal practice papers, reading 40 to 50 pages each day, and using flashcards to master vocabulary. Candidates who use the GMAT Verbal Books get a lot of verbal practice problems and ideas to learn.

GMAT Integrated Reasoning Section Syllabus

The Integrative Reasoning section of the GMAT IR tests your higher-order reasoning by asking you questions about integrating information (organising, synthesising), evaluating information (tradeoffs and benefits of various actions), making inferences from data (and predictions), relating information to other data, and strategizing based on data provided. The GMAT exam curriculum for IR has a total of 12 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes.

The following subjects are included in the GMAT syllabus for the integrated reasoning section:

  • GMAT Table Analysis assesses your ability to sort and analyse data in a table, such as a spreadsheet, to find the most important information or the data that satisfies particular criteria.
  • The GMAT Two-Part Analysis will assess your ability to answer complicated issues, whether they are verbal, numerical, or a mix of the two. The two-part assessment assesses your ability to solve simultaneous equations, weigh trade-offs, and distinguish between two things.
  • Examining data from several sources (tables, visuals, text passages, or a mix of all three) and carefully analysing each source of data to answer multiple questions is required for GMAT Multi-Source Reasoning. As a result, candidates may be asked to make conclusions, and others may ask you to assess if the data is relevant.
  • GMAT Graphics Interpretation asks you to establish associations and draw inferences from data provided in a graph or graphical representation (scatter plot, x/y graph, bar chart, pie chart, or statistical curve distribution) to aid in the analysis of business performance.

GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment Syllabus

The AWA GMAT curriculum assesses a candidate’s ability to write an essay in response to an argument. You’ll write a four- to six-paragraph answer in which you analyse the argument. The logic here is to see if you can think critically about the viewpoints you’ve been given. Analyzing the data to see what information could be useful in a more in-depth evaluation of the argument.

In the Analytical Writing Assessment section of the GMAT, the following are helpful:

  • Brainstorming
  • Putting together an introduction
  • Creating paragraphs for the body
  • Bringing your essay to a close

In the GMAT curriculum, there are two sorts of essays that might be asked:

You must evaluate the rationale and then offer your case in an argument essay. It all depends on how well-thought-out your case is.

You must compose an essay on the provided subject in the Issue essay section. It should be roughly 600 words long, and the candidate’s perspective can be supportive of the supplied statement or it can be their own.

The ideal method to prepare for the GRE AWA is to practise analytical writing from GMAT syllabus materials as often as possible, but because this will not affect your GMAT score, it is necessary to put it on the back burner.

What is the GMAT Syllabus?

The GMAT consists of 80 questions that must be solved in 3 hours and 7 minutes. Test takers will be given a variety of subjects to tackle across the quantitative, logical reasoning, and verbal reasoning areas of this exam. The GMAT score varies from 200 to 800 points. Get a good understanding of the exam structure and section-by-section details before completing GMAT Registration.

  • The GMAT exam has a time restriction for each component, which varies.
  • Test takers have three alternatives for attempting the four components of the test in the order they want.
  • The computer-adaptive Integrated Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning portions feature multiple-choice questions.
  • The preceding questions cannot be skipped, returned to, or changed in the above two sections.
  • Two-thirds of GMAT test takers get a score of 400 to 600.
  • A GMAT score of 760 or above places a candidate in the top 99 percentile.

2021 GMAT Syllabus

There is no set syllabus for GMAT, just as there is no set syllabus for GMAT 2020. These four parts are intended to assess the test takers’ analytical thinking abilities.

Analytical Writing Assessment on the GMAT

The test-taker examines reasoning offered around an argument and provides a criticism of the given argument in this Analytical Writing Assessment portion. Examiners assess the candidate’s critical thinking capacity as well as how well his or her thoughts are presented through writing skills in this part.

Note that the AWA component of the GMAT online exam is also available in the home edition.

AWA Score on the GMAT

This component is graded using two separate scores from two different raters. The Analytical Writing Assessment part awards points based on the following criteria:

The linguistic structure of essays, such as syntactic variation, the flow of ideas, and topic-by-topic analysis, is assessed using an electronic system.

Human evaluators examine the essay’s overall quality, including writing style, concept development, argument analysis, and appropriate examples to support logical reasoning.

Test takers should keep a few factors in mind when writing this portion.

Only one request for rescoring is authorised if a candidate retakes a test in order to improve their score.

The initial AWA score may be increased or decreased as a consequence of rescoring.

Within 20 days, candidates will get amended results online, as well as scores delivered to all programmes listed as score receivers.

There will be no reimbursement if a rescoring request has already been completed.

Integrated Reasoning Section of the GMAT

Test takers are challenged to integrate supplied material and discover answers to complicated issues in this area of the GMAT curriculum 2021 GMAT IR. Test takers are graded at top business schools based on how well data is analysed to make judgments. In this portion, test takers gather the information presented in a graphical fashion and look for related information. Test takers are also requested to discover connections between the associated issues in this part.

A total of four types of questions were posed in this section.

Reasoning from several sources

Analyze the Table

Interpretation of Graphics

Analyze in two parts

IR Score on the GMAT

The GMAT IR score ranges from 1 to 8. This portion of the GMAT is offered as a distinct data point for all those top business schools to examine the candidates’ application forms. This section’s score has no bearing on the GMAT’s other sections, including Quantitative, AWA, Verbal, and Total. The test taker will be issued an IR score as unofficial score report as soon as the exam is completed. Test takers receive a % of Integrated Reasoning score in their official score reports.

Quantitative Reasoning on the GMAT

The quantitative and mathematical ability of test takers is assessed in this area of the GMAT Quant course. Test takers have 62 minutes to complete 31 multiple-choice questions in this section. In this area of the GMAT maths syllabus, there are two sorts of questions:

Problem Solving: The exam taker must apply analytical thinking to answer quantitative questions in this portion.

Sufficient Data: Test takers evaluate relevant data and locate data points to solve the needed issue in this part.

GMAT Quantitative Score

To begin, test takers should be aware that this portion is computer adaptive, therefore the GMAT quant score is determined by a few criteria.

The total number of questions tried

The number of questions that a person properly answers

Other factors influencing the questions

It has been observed that the test taker who properly answers the most questions qualifies for this exam with a high GMAT score.

Verbal Reasoning on the GMAT

The test taker’s ability to communicate ideas through writing abilities is assessed in the GMAT Verbal Reasoning part. Test takers must convey logical concepts and coherence in plain language in this portion. In 65 minutes, one must attempt 36 multiple-choice questions. The following are three categories of questions asked in the Verbal Reasoning section:

Reading Comprehension: This exam determines how well the test taker understands the logical statements in the passage and how well they can express it in their own way. This portion assessed the test taker’s logical framework, writing style, and supporting concepts.

Critical Reasoning: This portion assesses how well the test taker examines an argument and determines its answer via logical writing. In this part, questions are posed in response to a brief piece of 100 words.

Sentence Correction: This component assesses the test taker’s linguistic skills. The candidate’s grammar use and linguistic structure are assessed in this part. In this portion, the exam taker must correctly compose sentences.

The verbal section of the GMAT

The GMAT verbal score ranges from 0 to 60, with each correct answer earning one point. Candidates receive a percentile rating in addition to their scaled score.

Computer Adaptive Testing (GMAT 2021) (CAT)

Computers are used by GMAC to make the exam pattern more dependable for test takers. According to the GMAT MBA curriculum, the test taker’s replies will determine which sorts of questions will be offered next. GMAC shares a more safe and dependable test pattern, as required by top business schools, thanks to the computer’s adaptive nature. This CAT exam pattern’s reasoning and benefits must be understood.

CAT stands for customised assessment testing. Because the exam is computer-assisted, the following round of questions will be entirely contingent on the test takers’ responses. If the test taker answers properly on the first question, the difficulty level of the following question will be greater, but if the test taker answers wrong on the first question, the difficulty level of the next question will be lower. The GMAT difficulty level is determined by the replies submitted to the computer.

Ability Percentile

Assume there are 10 questions in this area, and only 8 of them were answered correctly by 60% of the test participants. As a result, the accuracy level of 80 percent is equal to the 50th percentile. Similarly, if the same 10 questions were answered correctly by only 3% of the total test-takers, the percentile would have risen to 97 percentile.
